Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli was today conferred with the Padma Shri Award by President Pranab Mukherjee at a ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

"It's a huge honour for me to win the Padma Shri award, the fourth highest civilian award in this country. It's not just related to sports but it's an appreciation shown by the whole country. It gives me huge pleasure to receive this award," Kohli had told bcci.tv when the awards were announced earlier this year.

Kohli was in Kanpur for a T20 International match against England when the news of him winning the Padma Shri broke out. The Indian skipper has been in sensational form in the last year. He amassed as many as 1215 runs in Test cricket in 2016. He also became the first ever Test cricketer to hit double hundreds in four successive series.

The 28-year-old run led India to Test series wins in all four contests at home in what has been a long season. He struggled against Australia, failing to reach fifty even once, but India still managed to win the series 2-1.
